John Cage: Dichotomies of Composition

John Cage (1912-1992) was a pioneer of electronic music, with compositions that both shocked and delighted audiences. His work with the School of Music’s Experimental Music Studios included a chaotic piece titled HPSCHD, premiered in 1969 at the State Farm Center.

This composition is featured in contrast to Cage’s infamous and controversial work, 4’33.” “John Cage: Dichotomies of Composition” compares these two pieces, which are sonically opposed but share a common dependence on chance in their performances.

This exhibit was the winning proposal of the 2026 Graduate Student Exhibition Contest and will be on display in the Library Gallery throughout the month of April.
